Remember the fallen soldiers from the Safari Attack in 1985

DONATE

The initiator of the project, Yehuda Cohen is disabled from the Safari attack.
He is married and has three children (16,21,23) and lives in Givatayim
He works part-time at Moked , for most of his time, he is cycling for his rehabilitation
Yehuda Cohen is one of the responsible of the cycling department of Beit Halochem Tel Aviv

Why does Yehuda organize this ride?

"My desire to ride a bicycle was discovered in the wake of the need to rehabilitate body and soul and hence the need to fulfill and challenge myself using my favorite sport"
In the early years of the attack, the event was highly publicized and familiar to the public.
Years after years, the level of mention has dropped drastically. It is important to note that every year a very dignified memorial service is held by the Armament Corps.

The main goal is to "refresh" the event and tell the families that we will never forget their loved ones.

The story of the Attack Safari

On the afternoon of Sunday, March 10, 1985, a convoy of four "safari" trucks, including soldiers (Regular army and reserves), moved slowly along the narrow asphalt road leading from the "Calf Gate" in Metula to the Lebanese town of Marjayoun . It was 13:45 in the afternoon.

A few dozen soldiers, who returned from their Shabbat holiday from home, made their way to an armaments workshop, somewhere in southern Lebanon. The convoy of trucks was following the instructions - one armed jeep in the front and the other with its tail. The soldiers drove with their armored personnel carriers and helmets, with their rifle barrels turned out of the car and ready for anything.  The convoy passed a narrow bridge over Ayun, the passengers of the leading jeep noticed before they boarded the bridge, a large van.

"It was a red vehicle," recalls one of the jeep's soldiers, describing the last moments before the deadly explosion, still shaken by the impact of the disaster. "It was a Chevrolet, with a lot of paint, it was a cab  painted red, as far as I remember, there was only one driver, a young man who smiled at us, friendly." Although it was hard to suspect the innocent driver. Due to its proximity to the Israeli border, the drivers of the leading jeep suspected that something was wrong with the red pickup truck. Soldiers moved so  the driver could come on the right side of the road. The driver obeyed and stopped his car near the bridge of Nahal Ayun, allowing the first jeep and the first truck of the convoy to pass.

At 13:50 a huge explosion was heard that shook houses in Metula and smashed glass panes.

The red pickup flared into a huge ball of fire. The great page had uprooted the heavy safari truck from its place, which had been thrown to the side of the road. The truck began to ignite, and from the force of the blast, soldiers were thrown 300 meters away.

14 soldiers were wounded and 12 were killed.

The news of the attack reached the headquarters of the Regional Ordnance Ordnance Unit and its forces arrived quickly. In the coming weeks, everyone enlisted in visits to the wounded and the families of those killed. The sense of bereavement filled the family of the Ordnance Corps. However, despite the heavy feeling, the territorial armament unit, with the help of volunteers from all over the country, continued to operate until the last evacuation day.
